October 23 - November 6, 1992 The Benefit/Carrie & Austin Get Hot And Heavy/The Gambling Ring Makes A Crucial Mistake - THE PIT Storyline Begins

Austin is playing at Wings. Billie turns up to apologise about telling Carrie about the gambling but he won't have any of it. She sings a song and Phillip (Kim's fiance), who has just come in sees her and recognizes her. He heads her off as she leaves and though she tries to make out she doesn't know him eventually they go off to Casey's roadhouse where they talk. Turns out Phillip was the one that directed Billie in her previous incarnation as a porn star. He promises to try to get her a singing gig at Casey's. She goes back to Wings to tell Austin but he's gone. Cash is there though and offers Billie some cocaine. Austin and Carrie have gone down to the pier where Austin puts a flower in her hair and tells her to make a wish. Then he kisses her and she tells him it came true. He whispers that he wants to be with her tonight but she turns away. Eventually she tells him that she hasn't any experience. So he tells her he loves her and if she wants to take it slow that's fine by him. She says that she always she made out she had experience because she didn't want to appear stupid, but deep inside she felt that she should wait - and now she knows why and she's so glad. He tells her she's a very special and beautiful person who knows what's important in life.

Austin and Carrie run into Billie at the pub. She tells them about the audition but as she is leaving she drops her bag and Austin sees the coke. She swears she's not going to take it but Austin tells her not to come back to his apartment - he's throwing her out. Billie goes to her audition at Casey's but is so nervous she takes the coke. Bo just happens to turn up and sees her blow the audition. He takes her back to the station but doesn't arrest her. He tells her to go into rehab and then takes her back to Austin's. Carrie decides to take her in for a few days and later tells Austin it's for both Billie and him.

Carrie and Austin find Jesse who has been beaten up by loan sharks. They take him to Carly at the med-van where he is looked after. Austin decides that he wants to get out of it. They are back at the apartment when Tim arrives and Carrie has to tell him that she is with Austin now. Later Austin tells Tim that he wants to get out of the gambling but Tim argues that they're making lots of money. Austin tells him that from now they don't take anything more than a twenty dollar bet. However later Tim takes a thousand dollar bet.

Carrie and Austin are at the Arts Council Benefit Ball and decide to split. Carrie tells Austin that she wants him to take her home but she doesn't want him to leave.

Carrie and Austin go back to her place and Billie and Jesse aren't there. They start making out on the couch and soon it gets hot and heavy. Unfortunately Billie interrupts them and Carrie hastily pulls Austin's shirt on. Billie goes to bed but Carrie decides that she doesn't want to go on. Austin tells her that he will take her away for the weekend to a cabin he has. She tells him that sounds just like the way she dreamed it.

Austin tells Carrie that he has changed his mind about where to take her. An Inn overlooking the lake. However later, it turns out that the thousand dollar bet that Tim had taken had been won and Austin has to pay out $50,000. The catch is, he only has $5,000 in his account.

Bo tells Carrie that they think the gambling ring is operating out of Johnny Angels and asks her if she knows anything about it. She tells him she doesn't but later she talks to Jesse and worries that Austin will get into trouble. She finds Austin and he tells her that they are not going to talk about it any more and she will be just fine. However down at the college he gets a black eye from the guy he owes money to while at the pub Tim fills Carrie in on the money problem.

Austin tells Carrie he can't take her away after all because of the problems with money. She tells him she wants to help but he tells her to stay out of it. However she goes to see John and talks him into giving her $5000 for tuition fees. She goes back to the pub and tries to give it to Austin but he won't accept her and ends up breaking up with her. Later on when Roman comes in he sees the cheque and tells her she has to give it back.

MEANWHILE STELLA FORCES MARLENA INTO THE PIT

At the benefit Roman asks Marlena if she has finished with all her causes‚. Maybe they can go and talk about their problems. At home Marlena is packing when the phone rings. It's the airport saying her flight has been canceled and she has to take an earlier flight tonight. She tells Roman they can talk right now but he tells her he doesn't think she has enough time for him. They have a really painful fight in which Roman accuses her of turning away from their problems into her work. She tells him that for years she played second fiddle to his work and she never complained. He tells her that things haven't been the same as he got back. When she asks him what he means he tells her she's not the same woman he married. The Marlena that he married knew how to laugh and cry but she's built a wall around her that he can't penetrate. She tells him that it's not true. He asks her what she's afraid of - losing him again? She is almost crying as she says that she can't go through that kind of pain again, she though she would die when she lost him. He tells her that the only thing that got him through seven long years in that rat-hole of a prison was her and his love for her. He tells her that he thought that she knew he was still alive and that she was going to wait for him but then when he found out how fast she accepted John. She yells at him that none of them knew it wasn't him. He says that she brought John into their bed and made love to him. How could she not know? She tells him that she couldn't live without him and she willed herself to believe that John was him. She was living a fantasy - of the man that she first fell in love with - the man that promised he would never ever leave her. He says he didn't leave her. She argues that he did and when he came back he went right back undercover. He tells her it was for Bo. She ends up telling him that she's a little glad that she's leaving right about now. He can't believe that she wants to turn her back on all their problems and just walk away. He tells her that they are losing each other and the closest they have some to connecting of late is when she got drunk at Wings and it's sad that she has to be under the influence‚ for the two of them to spend any time together. She tells him she doesn't remember hearing any complaints about the time they spend in bed together. He tells her he just wishes there was more of it. She gets upset at this point and tells him she is a working mother and what does he expect her to do - pop home at lunch time - turn up the TV at the weekend? He yells at her he's not just talking about her body - he wants the whole package - her brain her soul and her heart but she's not giving it to him - so what is she saving it for, or should he ask who? At this point she's had enough and she picks up her suitcase and leaves. The phone rings and Roman answers it. It's Stella and he tells her that Marlena has gone already.

Stella takes off and follows the route that Marlena would have taken to the airport. Eventually she catches up to her and runs her off the road. Then she gets into Marlena's car and pulls the gun on her. She makes Marlena drive to the warehouse - Marlena complying because she finally sees that Stella is unbalanced. They get to the warehouse and Stella tells her to get down into the pit. Marlena looks down and then looks back at Stella - the fear and anger evident on her face. He says she won't go down there and lunges at Stella. Stella pushes her back though and she falls through the hole and down a story into the darkness. Stella looks down and says that she didn't want for her to get hurt but she brought it on herself. She boards the pit up and then leaves. The episode fades out on Marlena's unmoving form.

Stella goes back to the warehouse and realizes she forgot to switch the answering machine on. She does it and then uncovers the hole and calls out to Marlena. When she doesn't answer Stella shines the torch down on her and thinks she's dead. Finally Marlena moves and Stella is pleased but when Marlena says she's badly hurt and begs her to get help Stella refuses. She leaves and Marlena tries to move but is in agony. She lapses back into unconsciousness which is probably just as well when the rats come sniffing around. Later she wakes again and cries out for help. Meanwhile Roman is at the pub throwing darts. Bo tries to talk to him but gets nowhere and Taylor the same. Eventually he goes home and after looking at an old picture of the two of them turns out the light, not knowing that anything is wrong. Roman talks to Abe about his argument with Marlena. Abe tries to pass it off as a mid-life crisis cop thing. At the warehouse Stella checks on Marlena and the answer-phone. There are no calls.

Stella pretends that Marlena has just called her when Roman comes into the office. Roman has left some papers at home and Stella offers to go pick them up. At the house Kim checks out the goblets and then the answering machine. There is a message on there from Paul Whitman which she deletes. Back at the warehouse, Marlena has come too and is shouting for help. No-one hears her and she realizes it's no use. She finds the bread and water that Stella left and decides that she won't starve. Her ankle is twisted. Stella arrives with Roman's house keys and threatens the safety of the children if Marlena doesn't cooperate. She lowers the receiver down and dials Paul Whitman's number. Marlena calls Paul and asks him not to call her again. However she does tell him she had been looking forward to his seminar on claustrophobia. He tells her that was last year. Stella pulls the phone up and tells her that she'd better not try anything like that again. Roman heads over to Johns to voice his disapproval about John's gift to Carrie but after a while apologizes and they talk about the problems with Marlena. Roman tells John it may already be too late to save their marriage.

Stella comes by and Marlena asks her again to let her go. Stella refuses and tells her that her marriage might be in trouble, Taylor McCall is very interested in Roman. She leaves and Marlena asks Roman not to give up on her now. Back at the station, Roman tells Stella that he's worried about Marlena not calling the kids. He calls and leaves a message on the phone that Marlena hears. She is upset that he thinks she would not call the children because of their fight. Stella finds a kid who is up on charges for bootlegging and makes a deal with him. He splices a tape together of Marlena's voice which she intends to leave on Roman's machine. Stella takes it down and plays it to Marlena. After she has gone, Marlena goes back to unscrewing the vent in the wall. However, when she gets it open a snake comes slithering out towards her.
